BORGO LE VIGNEBeing at Borgo Le Vigne at this time of year, with the chance to explore Tignale and its surroundings at a leisurely pace, all the way down to the shores of Lake Garda, is about as close to paradise on earth as one could imagine – and here’s why. For one thing, thankfully, the scorching heat that accompanied us for much of the past summer – the hottest ever recorded – has finally disappeared. Temperatures are now wonderfully mild, and the crowds of holidaymakers and their summertime bustle are nothing more than a distant memory. Tignale is an oasis of peace and beauty, and it is no coincidence that the village has been awarded the Touring Club Italiano’s Orange Flag, thanks to the irresistible mix of experiences it offers: from breathtaking natural beauty and a profound sense of spirituality to tempting pleasures for the palate. Perhaps the most spectacular sight of all is the contrast between the deep blue waters of Lake Garda
and the vivid colours of the surrounding woods, which turn shades of yellow, orange, red and gold. The phenomenon is now internationally known as “foliage”, capturing the extraordinary beauty of walking deep into the forests at this time of year. Exploring the area on foot or by bike, alone or with company, is ideal in autumn, when the mild climate and the silence that seems to envelop everything make every outing a pleasure. You can discover the Tignale Waterfalls, following paths through terraces and rugged stretches of countryside, or visit the Sanctuary of Montecastello, a truly unique place perched dramatically above Lake Garda. And if you feel like venturing further afield, why not plan a trip to Gardone Riviera and the Vittoriale degli Italiani
the former home and museum of the great poet Gabriele D’Annunzio? Thanks to the enlightened leadership of Giordano Bruno Guerri, the estate has been restored to much of its former splendour and is unquestionably worth a visit, with countless wonders waiting to be discovered. Another fascinating destination is the Paper Museum in Toscolano Maderno, which brings to life the captivating and unmissable history of paper and printing through the centuries. Last but certainly not least, autumn also brings a festive touch to the flavours of Tignale, offering the palate delicacies that are rarely found in other seasons. Grapes, truffles and pumpkin take centre stage, celebrated protagonists on the tables of the people of Tignale and of visitors staying in the village.
